Mississippi's Daughter LIVE in Atlanta! 1.20.2012

"I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice."

-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A gift for Mississippi's Daughter

Before I get into "what's coming up next" I'd like to take a moment to express my extreme gratitude to all of you for the thoughtful messages, prayers and numerous acts of kindness during the transition of my sister Ledora, affectionately known as"Kisha"...

Little Gabbie & her little sister Ledora

I'm excited and inspired by all of the good things going on in my life! And when I say “good”, I mean even the bad because all things can work together for your good if you let it. So, on this the eve of my 33rd birthday (9/04) I can honestly say that life has taught me to always look for the LIGHT when dark circumstances arise.

Question:

What do you do when you’re a light bulb in a box of bowling balls?

Answer:

You find a way to let your light shine without getting crushed.

You've gotta READ the story behind the glory :)

"Vote for Me, Gabbie McGee" was really the very best slogan I could come up with at 1AM, but I digress... this entry is all about putting myself "out there".  Lately I've been discussing with my Life Coach (Yes, I have one and she's fabulous!) the importance of pushing beyond my comfort zone and for lack of a better cliché “going for mine”...

Recently, I was visiting my hometown of Greenville, MS. While the levees in my town are strong; in good condition and were able to hold back the rising waters, there are many rural areas across the Mississippi Delta that were not so fortunate.

One day, I’ll be the “Old Oak Tree” and my son Elijah & my daughter Evelyn will have children and their children will have children…I hope the life I will have lived before them will compel them to write songs about me...

It is because of what I've learned as I live that I became an advocate for health and wellness education, especially within the African American community.  Why? Because it could have been me! "Once upon a college campus" is another entry for another time, but TRUST...it could have very well been me...

"I found myself praying on the drive over to the rehearsal space "Lord thank you for this opportunity to use my gift for good. Let everything go according to YOUR plan.  Let there be peace, harmony and order.  Let YOU be seen in me and Lord, let me be Saphornia"...
